The History of Chelsea FC is a long and illustrious one, producing world-class players and bagging a good number of trophies on its 108 year journey.  However, it could all have very easily not happened at all.

An Edwardian businessman named Gus Mears saw the potential of football being played at an old athletics ground at Stamford Bridge.  Although he nearly changed his mind about the plans, he was persuaded to carry on with the footballing plans, but failed to persuade Fulham Football Club to leave their Craven Cottage ground.  This forced Mears to build a team for a stadium instead of the other way around.

Although several other names were put forward, such as Kensington FC and even London FC, the name Chelsea FC was adopted.  Turned down by the Southern League, Chelsea FC applied to the Northern dominated Football League and were the first team to join the league without even kicking a ball.
